The Utah-based NHL team is closing in on its new name.

Ryan Smith, the franchise’s owner, revealed on Wednesday’s Pat McAfee Show that the naming process is down to four potential options. In early May, Smith’s own company Qualtrics ran a survey that included 20 different names for the first round of voting.
“Bro, we’re coming, we’re coming,” Smith told McAfee. “The next survey iteration will be out soon. We’ve got our four. I think Mammoth is up there. Yeti is up therearizona coyotes move to houston. I think a couple other ones are up there. It should be good.”
Current plans are for the team to remain unnamed for the 2024-25 season, wearing jerseys with the name “UTAH,” before assuming their eventual name in the fall of 2025. Another round of fan voting is expected to narrow down the options even further as Utah gets set for their first-ever offseason.
“Utah’s NHL team is a community asset, and we want to make sure that the community has a say in what the name is,” Smith said in a statement to KSL Sports earlier this monthutah nhl team jokes. “Utah has shown up for this team from the moment the NHL awarded us the franchise less than three weeks ago, and it is only fitting that our fans get the rare opportunity to help name the team they’ll be cheering for. ”
KSL, a Salt Lake City news station, ran its own survey when the 20 potential names were initially announced and revealed the results after Smith’s appearance on McAfee’s show. Their data shows Yeti in the lead, Outlaws in second, Mammoth and Blizzard tied for third, and Black Diamonds in fifth.
They report that no other name appeared on more than 20 percent of ballots. Blast, Frost, Glaciers, and Ice were the least popular choices.
Smith has partnered with Doubleday & Cartwright, a design and media consulting agency, to eventually come up with the team’s logo, mascot, colors, and other branding elements. The agency boasts past work with the Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers, and Inter Miami FC.
Since the middle of April, multiple trademark applications for Utah-related nicknames have been filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Those nicknames include Blizzard, Venom, Fury, Yetis, Outlaws, and others.
