Last week, the NHL club from Utah announced that the field for the team name had been narrowed down to six finalists.
On Thursday, they gave hockey fans their first glimpse of what colors they’ll be wearing when they take the ice for the first time this fall. According to the club, they chose Rock Black to represent “the darkness of the night in the mountains and the volcanic rock of the deserts of Utah.”
Salt White was chosen to illustrate “both the snow on Utah’s peaks and the famous salt flats.”
And finally, Mountain Blue was selected as a “representation of Utah’s rich winter sports history and clear skies more than 230 days a year.”
For home games played at the Delta Center, the team wears black jerseys, with white and blue stripes down each arm, the bottom of the jersey and the socks. The club will wear white jerseys for road matches. The organization worked with design firm Doubleday & Cartwright to create a look that they hope will convey a “clean, crisp, traditional aesthetic.”
The club noted that the color palette for the NHL club is complementary to the NBA’s Utah Jazz, which is also owned by Smith Entertainment Group (SEG). Last week, the Jazz unveiled expanded colors, including a similar sky blue tertiary color.
In unveiling their colors on Thursday, the Utah-based NHL club says the look will “serve as a catalyst for the team’s visual identity and set the stage for future branding efforts.” The team’s selections at this month’s NHL Draft in Vegas will wear a black version of the Utah jersey when they are called to the podium.
Last week, SEG announced it was launching the second round of its survey process to help select the name of Utah’s new NHL franchise. The first round of voting resulted in six clear favorites who have advanced to the next phase. According to the hockey team, these six names are still alive in the process: Blizzard, Mammoth, Outlaws, Venom, Yeti and Utah Hockey Club.

“Today is a monumental day for the state of Utah as we officially close the creation of a new NHL franchise,” Ryan Smith, governor of Utah Hockey Club and chairman of Smith Entertainment Group, said in a news release Thursday. “The NHL has been great to work with during this process and has provided us with invaluable guidance and support. We have a lot of work to do – training camp starts in less than 100 days – and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s to come.”
