SALT LAKE CITY () — The search for a team name for Utah’s new NHL team has been narrowed down to four.
At least, that’s what team owner Ryan Smith hinted at during a brief appearance on on Wednesday, May 29.
McAfee, a former NFL punter turned sports analyst, video-called Smith into the show on a whim to show off the Stanley Cup sitting on his set. McAfee took the opportunity to see if there were any updates to a team name, to which Smith replied “We’re coming.”
“We’ve got four,” said Smith. “I think Mammoth’s up there. Yeti’s up there. I think a couple of other ones are up there. It should be good.”

In early May, the Smith Entertainment Group as finalists for Utah’s future hockey team. Voting for the names was open until May 22 with fans encouraged to vote for up to four of their preferred names from the initial list.
SEG hasn’t said anything yet about the next steps in the naming process aside that more information will be announced later this summer.
The new branding for the former will not be ready in time for Utah’s inaugural season in the fall of 2024. For the first year, the Utah NHL team will simply go by the name “Utah,” with no logo, no mascot and no official team colors. In place of any logo, the NHL team will just wear “Utah” on their jerseys.
Smith seemed excited about Utah’s future in the NHL indicating to McAfee that Utah will be bringing home the coveted Stanley Cup at the end of the season. He joked that the Utah-based team would fill the Cup “full of diet Mountain Dew and all sorts of stuff.”
