When Conn Smythe bought the team in 1927, he renamed them the Maple Leafs, since he once scouted a team called the “East Toronto Maple Leafs.” Smythe, a World War I veteran, was very patriotic and liked the grammatically incorrect name’s link to Canada’s national symbol.
